Soul Congress in a brand new band on the island of Maui. They play mainly funk and soul music. I have to admit after seeing them perform, they are awesome! One thing that blew me past Pluto in their lead vocalist Clay Mortensen. He has such a wide variety of vocal ranges from a very low bass to a moderately high tenor. He really knows how to get people moving and on the dance floor. His energy mixed with the others in this group makes for one hell of an awesome show.
Josh Greenbaum is Mortensen’s back up vocalist. Like Clay, Josh has that special touch to get people’s energy flowing and get them out on the dance floor. Greenbaum can perform a wide variety of genres like Mortensen. Both of them can hit the richness of Soul, Funk, Pop, Alternative, Hip-Hop, and R&B.
What also makes this band so amazing is their talented instrumentalists.
Josh Greenbaum is also the band’s percussionist. He is one of Maui’s most talented drummers to date. His drumming style is smooth and he doesn’t over power vocalists or other instrumentalists.
Chris Sendrey is one of Maui’s most talented guitar and string instrumentalists. His energy mixed with Mortensen and Greenbaum makes for one hell of an amazing performance. His strums can be heard and felt yet doesn’t over power the vocalists and other instrumentalists playing. He is known to be a high energy guitar player. He also has a laid back style of playing too. This talent is amazing.
Shawn Michael is one of Maui’s most talented bass guitar and string instrumentalists to date. His strumming is rich in sound and plays just loud enough to hear the bass tones and yet doesn’t over power any of the vocalists or other instrumentalists playing. He has been seen shredding away at the bass and also has a laid back playing style.
George Teve is one of Maui’s most talented key board and electric piano instrument players I have met. His style of playing is smooth and rich. Teve has a knack of surprising the crouds with his various playing styles. He can play smooth and rhythmic and then go all out playing hard core. He compliments his skills perfectly with the others in this band.
All in all they contribute to the high energy and really compliment each other very well. You can see Soul Congress perform every Thursday night at Three’s Bar and Grill in Kihei. They have also had gigs at the Kahului Ale House in Central Maui. You have GOT to come and watch this new band! A blog post and review can’t fully describe how well they play until you have seen them. You never know who they might have performing with them. They are known to throw curve balls and feature other musicians in their gigs. Hope to see you at Three’s Bar and Grill Thursday nights!
